Champagne and Royalty
Champagne is surely the most festive and most famous wine on Earth. And it is only called Champagne if it comes from the French region of… Champagne. At Royal Wines, we are as proud as we are happy to offer you a careful selection of terrific champagnes with a clear Royal link. But both Champagne region and champagne wine have a very old and fascinating relationship with Royal patrons.

THE HISTORY OF
CHAMPAGNE
The history of champagne wine provides a marvelous example of focus and hard work by its producers – only gaining global acclaim, however, thanks to staunch Royal support at crucial times.
So what happened?
ROYAL ASSOCIATION DURING A THOUSAND YEARS
The Champagne region in North-Western France has probably been producing wine since the Romans, who called it Campania – from which the name Champagne was derived later on. The capital city of the Champagne region is Reims. Tradition has it that around the year 500, the Cathedral of Reims offered a scene worthy of a Hollywood movie when King Clovis of the Franks converted to Christianity along with 3,000 of his soldiers. Today the authenticity of the event may be doubted by some historians but in the ensuing centuries, this epic image strongly appealed to the local imagination and from 816 until 1825 – so for literally a thousand years – virtually all Kings of France were crowned and anointed in the Cathedral of Reims. This permanent association of the Champagne region with Royalty represented an enormous commercial boost for its local wines.
